Getting Out the Give! Save the Date!
Have you heard of #GivingTuesday? (Yes, this is really how it is spelled!) If not, you are not alone. #GivingTuesday is still a fairly recent social phenomenon. For the 2014 Holiday Season, it will be in just its third year globally and second year locally here in Philadelphia. To put it simply:
We have a day for giving thanks --- Thanksgiving
We have two days for getting deals --- Black Friday and Cyber Monday
Now, there’s a day for giving back --- Giving Tuesday!
The idea started when a couple of foundations and other nonprofits got together and decided that the commercialism of the holiday season had begun to outweigh the charitable and giving nature of the holiday season. In an effort to help people change the way they think about, talk about, and participate in the holidays, they decided to create a day for people to give back. So, in a nutshell, #GivingTuesday is a day to celebrate giving! It is also a call to action to give more, give smarter and put personal philanthropy back into the giving season. It is celebrated on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, Giving Tuesday will be “getting out the give” on December 2, 2014.
What does that mean for you? The whole point is to do something that reminds you of the giving nature of the holidays. Even though the giving season is still months away, it will be here before we know it and PCA is actively planning for it in advance. How? We’re thinking of all the ways that you can connect with our work:
- Donating Grocery Cards to help us purchase juice and snacks for our children and their families while they are here at PCA
- Setting Up a Donor Page on our personal fundraising platform and personally fundraising for us
- Attending a GiveBack event as advertised on our website
- Registering us as your nonprofit on “Smile at Amazon” so that a portion of your Amazon Smile purchases come directly to us
- Making a gift and having your company match it
- Giving a gift that will give all year and becoming a monthly donor for #GivingTuesday
We would love to know how you will support us during the giving season. Contact us at 267-546-3811 or Katherine@philachildrensalliance.org to talk about your ideas for supporting the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance through #GivingTuesday and Holiday events and activities.

Keynote Address: Matthew Sandusky
The Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal was one of the most highly publicized sex abuse cases in history. During the trial, Matthew disclosed that his adopted father, Jerry Sandusky from ages 10-16, sexually abused him. Matthew’s disclosure interview, to police, was leaked to the media. He and his family were placed in the center of a media firestorm.
Through the traumatic experiences Matthew has experienced he has decided to take on the role of advocate for CSA survivors. Matthew is giving survivors a voice to raise awareness to an epidemic that still remains mostly silent. He is also showing survivors there is hope and that healing does happen.
Founder of Peaceful Hearts Foundation, along with his wife Kim, Matthew helps promote stronger statute of limitation laws, education for children, stronger mandated reporter laws, and other legislation as the need arises. Peaceful Hearts also helps survivors of childhood sexual abuse find the support and love they need and deserve.
Matthew uses his life’s story to motivate people to take action to prevent CSA and how to positively engage and support adult survivors of CSA. He hopes that by telling his story he is able to show survivors that hope always exists and that healing will happen. “We have been broken, but with Love and Support, we will rebuild and become stronger than we ever could have imagined”.
Matthew Sandusky attended Penn State University, studying Business. He was married in 2011 to his wife Kim. They still currently reside in State College, PA along with their five children.
