3rd Annual PCA Legislative Breakfast - March 1, 2013

Working with DHS, the Police and the DA’s office, Philadelphia Children’s Alliance (PCA) provides a coordinated response to allegations of abuse and provides forensic interviews and other support services for the city’s victims of child sexual abuse. Because of PCA’s expertise and knowledge, sometimes other child victims of traumatic situations are brought to the facility to be interviewed by PCA’s highly trained forensic interviewers. It is PCA’s policy to protect the privacy and identity of the victims we serve. Therefore, we cannot verify who comes here and we cannot comment on specific cases. Thank you for your understanding.

In Philadelphia, there are 1,600 child sexual abuse cases reported each year, according to the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance, the city’s primary intervention organization working with child victims of sexual abuse. And one-third of them are boys.

In an attempt to raise awareness for victims, their loved ones and the community, the PCA and MaleSurvivor—a web-based nonprofit that is committed to preventing, healing and eliminating sexual victimization of boys and men through treatment, research, education, advocacy and activism—are joining together to present a screening at the Free Library of the film Boys and Men Healing, a documentary that follows three men as they tell of their difficulties of growing up with their abuse, reaching out for help and the path to transforming their lives.

PW sat down with a few of the screening’s key players, including Christina Kirchner, PCA’s executive director; Chris Anderson, executive director of MaleSurvior; Jim Struve, a social worker and co-chair of MaleSurvivor Weekends of Recovery; and Paul Flanagan, 59, a local survivor of child sexual abuse. [In the article] they discuss providing victims with a safe outlet to begin their healing process, and educating the community on prevention.

Although this call to action has its roots in the Penn State scandal, the problem of “see-no-evil, speak-no-evil” is everywhere. The City of Philadelphia has a hotline for child abuse reporting: 215-683-6100. So does the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: 1-800-932-0313. Philadelphia district attorney Seth Williams says if you are aware of a child in danger, or even suspect it, don’t do nothing. “Either contact one of the hotline numbers, or call 911,” Williams (at lectern in photo) said today. “We all work very closely together all the time, so if you call one, it’s the same as calling all of us. I know sometimes it’s hard to believe that someone who you know may be involved in this kind of activity, but call anyway.” Speakers said the chances of a child being harmed by a stranger at the mall are far lower than by a friend or family member in what should be “home sweet home.”

The Philadelphia Children’s Alliance (PCA) received a $15,710 Ronald McDonald House Charities’ grant during a check presentation held at the organization’s new location yesterday at the November meeting of the PCA Board of Directors. The grant was designated to fund a new forensic interview room, and equipment and waiting room furnishings for PCA’s relocated space to serve child victims of abuse and promote healing and justice for children. Chris Kirchner, executive director of PCA, representatives from the organization’s board of directors, and families served by the PCA were on hand to accept this grant.
